  1. Hello!
    Jack Howell here

'The Swallows and Amazons' was certainly not the best play I've seen in my life but I definitely enjoyed a lot of the effects they used in it. (e.g: the people holding circular frames to make it seem as if the audience was looking through a telescope.) There wasn't much that grabbed my attention but I certainly loved the music in it because of the way it was presented. The audience could clearly see who was playing which instrument which I think added a lot to the play. Without the people who did the music and held all of the props,it wouldn't have interested me much and I don't think it would have received the four star rating from the Daily Mail.

    1. I think that the play was pretty boring and the beginning left a lot to be desired, so much so I can't even remember it!
however I can remember when the the "Amazon pirates" came in. They used music to try and build atmosphere which would have worked - if I was the annoying little boy (who was probably about 4) who sat in front of me and got scared ALL the time!

  3. I think the play was quite exciting because of the plot. The opening started off slowly but soon there was singing which made it more interesting. The rest of the play also had lots of music and unique props which I liked. The play ended happily because every character learnt to get on well.

  4. Hey,

    Tamsin says:

I thought that Swallows and Amazons was a good play, but not AS good as others, like The Railway Children. I love the way the music was performed, as (no offence) it brightened up the stage much more that the actors; Mind you, I loved their expression, and how the words were presented. I also enjoyed the facial expressions, as it too helped the whole play come together. I thought that the use of props were ingenious, like a frame being held up so that we could see what the charactors were looking at, and how some props were smaller to show how far away they were. All in all the thing that grabbed my attention the most was the mind-blowing, fantasticly incredible music, and the appropriation of how the cleverly presented props were used.

    Thanks for taking us!

  5. Swallows and Amazons wasn't the best play I have seen. The opening was very boring and dull because it started off with a quiet and slow song. I liked the way that people held circular frames so it seemed like the auidience were looking through a telescope. There was only one particular scene that caught my attention and that was because there were a lot of bright colours in the scene instead of dull colours.

Thank you for taking us anyway.

  6. I thought the begining was clever because it started with an enigma making you want to watch on and find out what happened.

I also thought they managed to set the scene well with a limited use of props and scenery. It was also good the way they used the music to show different emotions and situations.

  7. The begining didn't make me go WOW. I think what they did was clever though. The music was quite dull but the characters brought the scene alive.

Only one scene caught my eye and made me wonder what it was about and that was the scene with Titty in the boat, with the pirates creeping around her.

  8. When I went to the theatre trip, I was quite excited to watch the performance. The opening of the show was very unique because some people were playing instruments and others started coming into frames onto stage. As for my opinion, it was a slow and peaceful starting and I think the only thing at the beginning of the show that would grab the audience's attention was the curiosity of what would happen next. Overall I think the show was good, and particularly the actors were very talented indeed with their skills of facial expressions, body movement, emotions in their voice etc.

  9. I thought the opening used is a very effective type of opening. By not describing what the story is about, they captivate the audience and grab their interest greatly. When a film or a play goes straight into the story, it creates a bit of mystery and tensions the curiosity of the audience. I particularly liked the way that something the actors saw in the distance was at the rear of the stage, which was clearly visible to the audience. The music grabbed the audience because of its loudness and the fact it was used quite a lot. The fact that the music was played by a proper orchestra, helps in the fact that pure music is much more delightful that music heard on speakers. On the other hand, sometimes when the musicians were playing, the audience’s eye was on them so they were probably disinterested at the scene which was playing at the time of the music.

  10. "Swallows and Amazons" was definately a creative way of bringing characters and themes alive. The concept was definately designed for perhaps younger children, I didn't enjoy the play as much as I would have liked to but did enjoy it more than I thought I would. Up sides: I feel that comedy was the strongest point in the film but nothing that made you say "WOW!"...... Down sides: most of the characters were as dull as the introduction music (well except Rodger). Aside from the fact that the actors did not show much emotion, the effect that was desired for the extras running about and creating those suttle special effects that make all the difference, was not created. They wore rather obvious clothes and would have been much better off with black outfits that just blended right in. Special effects that were perhaps a little bit more on the lines of a RIOT! Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the script, I think the plot was riviting and exciting - it was just not executed with that special somehing.
My favourite bit: four words - "we're the Amazon pirates!!!!

  11. I found the play quite boring, the begining didn't get me intrested enough. I thought the way that the actors came out of the frame was very clever, I also enjoyed the range of musical instruments that were being played live, it brought the play to life.
I was blown away by the exstrodinary talent of some of the actors, they used good body language and facial expression. My favourite character would have to be Titty!

Overall I enjoyed the play, but I think as you get into the play it gets a lot more exiting and intresting.

A big thank you for orgainising year seven to go and see it!

  12. OK, so it wasn't a great play but it was unique in some ways. The beginning created wonder because you could see all these people in frames and you weren't sure the role they played in the production. The music helped you through the slow beginning and eventually you understood. The enigma created in the start was: who are the characters and why are they where they are?
Overall not the best play but it got there eventually...

  13. This production of Swallows and Amazons comprised a small company of actors and musicians, whose parts meant they were all on stage at once; some people may have liked this approach to the play, but for me, it limited my enjoyment of this adaptation of a classic story. As a consequence I would prefer to see a more traditional approach to Arthur Ransome’s book. An improvement would be that the orchestra was out of view and there would be more general effects. The opening was actually quite boring, as it was all the children singing a sad and sorrowful song, which lowered my expectations of the rest of the play and bored me until the song was over. In my view, the opening didn’t grab the audience’s attention at all because they were immediately dragged into a long and somewhat dull song. On a positive note, my favourite effect was how they used someone holding a circular frame in front of people speaking, in order to make it look like you were looking at them through a telescope. Whilst I didn’t enjoy the play as much as the book, I found it interesting how they chose to create effects such as the water and the boat.

  14. Hi, i didnt go on the trip so Im talking about a trip i went on to see "Sleeping Beauty". I really enjoyed this play because the costumes were really creative and they really made the caharcters who they were. The music was all right as it was really nothing out of the ordinary but the singing was fantastic. The scenes were really well though out and i think they fitted the story really well. All in All i recomend seeing this play.

    Thanks.

  15. i thought the beginning of swallows and amazons drew people in because it was weird but interesting at the same time. Also, the people in the blue coats made people notice that it was starting and get people interested.

  16. Luke Wignall,
i thought that Swallows and Amazons was an intresting play which involved a mix mix of genres and and a range of characters. The way that the music was played on the scene was very clever, but it was hard to really imagine the play as a real life scenario as the scenery was worse then some an other places because the background scenery didnt change.

  17. I thought that the music in Swallows and Amazons was really good, but I didn't get the whole plot were they imagining it or was it really happening? I also thought the scene could of changed and there were to many people needed to help with the scenery but in some ways that was a clever touch to add to the play. But overall, I think it was a good play.
