Four Seasons Assessment

Your task is to:

Write an extended description of one of the four seasons.  You must include a short poem within the description.
You may wish to write about more than one season - you could describe how one turns into another (e.g. winter into spring).
Use all of the techniques that we have practiced over the last half term, not fogetting to utilize all of the amazing language you have magpied and put into your Writing Journal!
Do read the Writing Recipe Booklet provided, to use as a checklist.
Final draft is due in: Tuesday 17th July.
I do hope you've enjoyed this creative writing unit as much as I have teaching it - you're writing has improved leaps and bounds!

Creating a Writing Journal

Last term we created a Reading Journal; this term we are going to create a Writing Journal!  The principle is the same, but in your Writing Journal you will be writing down ('magpie-ing') any words, phrases, metaphors, similes or ideas that you read, hear or create yourself.  This will enable you to develop a bank of creative resources that you can draw from.

TASKS:

1. Find a notepad (it doesn't need to be expensive) and make it your own (i.e. decorate it!).  On the first page, write down the one thing you are most proud of having written - this can be anything from a story that you wrote in yr5, a poem that you wrote last week, a heartfelt letter or email to a friend or a entry in your own personal diary.  Write down why you are proud of it - is it very moving/funny/clever?  Have you used sophisticated language?

2. Generate some new word combinations:

a)Make a list of nouns starting with any letter of the alphabet.

b)Make a list of adjectives starting with any other letter of the alphabet.

Parrot
                                                   Trembling                                                     A trembling parrot

Pliers
PLUS           Tiny                                  EQUALS              A tiny pair of pliers
Paint
                                                   Terrific                                                         Terrific paint
Porpoise
                                                   Tatty                                                             A tatty porpoise

3. Choose ONE of your new word combinations and put it into a paragraph - perhaps this could be the start of a strange story?

Reading Journal task 2

Choose ONE character from the book that you're currently reading.  Try to imagine being them; how do you feel?  What is your relationship like with other characters in the book?  What kind of personality do you have?

Write a diary entry for your character, from whereever you are in the book.  Remember that you are writing in the first person ('I woke up feeling awful...').

Begin with 'Dear Diary...'

To really get under the skin of the character, try to use some of the vobulary that they use, so that you capture their 'voice'.

Post in the comments box how you found this task; was it easy or difficult?  Why?  Was the character's voice clear?

Starting a Reading Journal

This week's task is to start your own Reading Journal.  Follow the steps below so that you can begin recording your reading habits, what you enjoy and what you dislike.

1. Get a notebook
2. On the first page write the following: your favourite book; your favourite genre; the last book that you read; the strangest book that you have read; the name of a book you'd like to read.
3. On the next page, write the title and author's name of the book you're currently reading.
4. Write down why you chose this book.
5. Write a brief summary of the story so far of this book.
6. Write down a prediction of what you think will happen in the story.
7. Make a note of the date at the bottom of your notes and the current page number that you are on.

THAT'S IT!

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Friday 4th May - HW

This is the first section of a longer writing task that you are going to complete over this half term.

Task:  Create a 'Captain's Log' for the ship in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Every ship is supposed to have a log book, which is filled in every day by the captain. If he dies, the next senior officer fills it in (usually the First Mate).
You are going to write a series of entries for the log of the ship in the poem.
This should be written in the first person.  For part of the voyage, these will be written by the captain; after all the other men die only the ancient mariner is left to fill it in.
Decide on appropriate dates (the mariner's tale was supposed to be thought of as already very old when the poem was published: it should be no later than about 1700; other clues to the date are the light-house and the mariner's crossbow).
If you wish you can make the log look old by staining the pages, by your handwriting and spelling.
Use quotations and words from the poem in your entries.
Be as descriptive as possible – appeal to the senses (what does it look/sound/feel/taste/sound like to be becalmed at sea?).
After we have studied each section, you will be asked to write the entry for the log that describes what happened in that section.

HW: Write Entry 1 & 2(based on what happens in Parts 1 & 2 of the poem).

Easter Holiday HW - poetry!

Dear 7z1,

For HW this holiday I'd like you to do three things:

  1. Find the poem 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by Coleridge and read it (look here: http://www.online-literature.com/coleridge/646/). Warning: it is quite long!
  2. Write a summary of what happens in the poem - please DON'T just copy one from the internet; I want it in your own words. This doesn't need to be very long - a paragraph is fine.
  3. Find an image from the internet that is related to the poem, print it out and stick it into your book. What part of the poem does it present?

This is due in for Tuesday 17th April.

See you then!

HW: Staging Discussion

IF you went on the theatre trip, write a comment on what you thought of the play (particularly the opening). How did it grab the audience's attention?

If you didn't go on the trip, you may write about ANY theatre trip that you have been on.

We will discuss the results next lesson!
